Gunmen abduct a director with the Sharia Court of Appeal in Kaduna

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of a director with the Sharia Court of Appeal in Kaduna.

The police said the abductors also killed the victim

’s son while carrying out the operation on July 24.

The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo said on Thursday in Kaduna, that the police were notified of the incident at about 6:30am on Wednesday.

“The DPO of Sabon Tasha Kaduna reported that he received a distress call that armed men entered the residence of one Hussain Manjalo of Doka Mai Jama’a via Kujama Village, Chikun Local Government Area and shot dead one Abdurrauf Muhammad after the victim was said to have challenged them.

“And (they) kidnapped his mother, Hajiya Aishatu Muhammad, Director Personnel Management of Sharia Court of Appeal in Kaduna State.

“Patrol teams led by the DPO quickly moved to the area and evacuated the corpse to the hospital.

“A combined team of policemen including Anti  Kidnapping Unit of the Command and Vigilantes were later dispatched to the area with a view to combing the general area for possible rescue of the victim and arresting the criminals.

“The IGP’S IRT were also contacted for technical support in tracking the hoodlums,” he said.

President Buhari Swears in Honourable Justice Tanko Muhammad as Chief Justice of Nigeria in State House on 24th July 2019. This followed his earlier confirmation by the Nigerian senate.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad , CFR was born 31st December 1953 at Doguwa - Giade, a local government area in Bauchi State, Northern Nigeria. He attended Government Secondary School, Azare where he obtained the West Africa School Certificate in 1973 before he later proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University where he received a bachelor's degree in Law (Islamic Law) in 1980. He later obtained a Master and Doctorate (Ph. D) degree from the same university in 1984 and 1998 respectively.

On Thursday, 11th July, 2019, Tanko Muhammed was nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as substantive CJN. This is coming barely 24 hours after National Judicial Council (NJC) recommended him to the president

President Muhammadu Buhari said Tuesday in Abuja that the priority of his administration “is to create as many jobs as possible.” Speaking at an audience with the National Executive Council of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers led by its President, Comrade John Adaji, at the State House, President Buhari said in the last four years, the Federal Government deployed limited resources to job-creating sectors like agriculture and mining.

Lamenting the closure of textile factories especially in the North which gave rise to crimes, he said, “We promoted policies that will support local industries such as import restrictions. We introduced programmes that provided affordable and accessible capital to both large and cottage industries.”

He added that, “We also introduced Executive Orders that encouraged the procurement of Made in Nigeria goods and services.”

According to the President, his administration would continue to support the above policies and programmes in the years ahead, stressing: “We will not allow Nigeria to return to the days of exporting jobs through the importation of food and clothing items which can be produced locally. We owe this to the over 200 million Nigerians.”

The President noted that the textile and garmenting sector has the potential to create millions of jobs and will therefore, remain one of the priority sectors for the administration.

Referring to his recent directive to all Government uniformed institutions to use locally produced garments, President Buhari said unbelievable number of jobs will be created when the military, police, para-military organisations including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), fully patronise local industries.

He urged State Governments to buy into this policy for their schools, hospitals and other institutions.

On the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) which Nigeria recently signed, President Buhari said, “We have developed a comprehensive strategy to fully optimise the benefits” with necessary safeguards in place. He stressed that “Our priority remains to create jobs in Africa for Africans using a large proportion of African raw materials.”

Speaking on behalf of the Union, the General Secretary, Comrade Issa Aremu, commended President Buhari for being the first Nigerian leader to grant the 41-year-old body an audience, and making the revival of the textile industry a campaign topic.

Bemoaning the closure of hundreds of textile factories which used to employ “millions of workers more than the workforce of the Federal Government in the 70s and 80s,” he also saluted the textile-friendly policies of the administration such as the interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Executive Order on the use of local garments by uniformed organisations among others.

Pledging to support the administration to “keep our youths out of the streets,” the Union urged that the incidence of smuggling be checked in order to maximise the job-creating benefits of the textile industry.

President Buhari was decorated as the Life Patron of the Union in appreciation of his textile-friendly efforts.

Senate begins screening of ministerial nominees

The Senate on Wednesday commenced the screening of the 43 ministerial nominees appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the list of the nominees was sent to the Senate on Wednesday in accordance with section 147 (2) of the 1999 Constitution.

President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan had announced that there would be two sessions for the exercise.

He said the morning session would commence by 10:00 a.m. daily and terminate at 1:00 p.m., while the second session would commence by 2:00 p.m. and end in the evening “depending on the mood of the Senate.”

Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, the nominee from Abia opened the floor by introducing himself to the lawmakers and requesting for questions.

Sen. Adamu Aliero (APC Kebbi) and Sen. George Sekibo (PDP Rivers) were the first to ask Ogah questions about the solutions to what they described as the slow economic growth and youth unemployment in the country.

Ogah, in his answer, identified building of critical infrastructure and agriculture as ways out of the current challenges.

He said: “We need to improve our critical infrastructure, that’s the only way we can create jobs.

“We do not need to also concentrate our industries in the urban areas; we need to create industries in the rural areas.

“We cannot put our economy purely on oil. Yes, agreed that oil is a cash cow but we can develop our agriculture.

“Nigeria has the capacity to feed the whole world. Nigeria economy is about N43 trillion and the private sector is expected to drive the nation’s economy.”

On deregulation, Ogah said the country needed a guided deregulation where everything is not dumped on the economy.

He also insisted that the current value of the naira was okay.

Meanwhile, Sen. Philip Aduda (PDP FCT) had raised concern about the non-inclusion of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the ministerial list.

He was backed by Sen. Dino Melaye (PDP Kogi) who referred to Sections 297 and 299 of the 1999 Constitution which mandated that the FCT be treated like other 36 states of the federation.

Debate on Aduda’s point of order delayed the commencement of the ministerial screening till 11:09 a.m. when Lawan finally put the issue to rest.

The Senate Leader, Sen. Abdullahi Yahaya (APC Kebbi), thereafter, moved for the Senate to receive the nominees, and the motion was seconded by Minority Leader, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe (PDP Abia).

NAN reports that the nominees would be screened based on the availability of their curriculum vitae to the lawmakers, as announced by the senate president. (NAN)

Boris Johnson has won the UK's Conservative Party leadership contest and will take over from outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May when she steps down on Wednesday. Johnson was born 1964 in New York City to wealthy upper-middle class British parents, educated at the European School, Brussels I, Ashdown House, and Eton College. He read Classics at Balliol College, Oxford, where he was elected President of the Oxford Union in 1986.

Johnson, a former Mayor of London and British Foreign Secretary, took 92,153 votes, while rival Jeremy Hunt scored 46,656 votes in a ballot of party members. Turnout was 87.4%

"Today the campaign is over and the work begins," Johnson said in a speech immediately after the results were announced Tuesday.

Let the court decide El Zakzaky's fate - Presidency to Shiite Members

The Presidency appeals to El-Zakzaky-led Shiite members to desist from needless violent street protests and await the decision of the court in Kaduna where their leader is currently being tried.

The issue of El-ZakZaky is before the court in Kaduna and his supporters should focus on his on-going trial instead of causing daily damages, disruptions and public nuisance in Abuja.

It is wrong to be in court and resort to violence at the same time in order to get justice for anybody accused.

The destruction of public property in the name of protest is not within the right of this group of Shiite members and no government anywhere would have tolerated a situation where any group would take over public roads in cities as they have done in Abuja and interfere with the rights of other citizens who are prevented from reaching their destinations.

We imagine a situation where families are taking their loved ones to hospital for emergency treatment and they are held up needlessly by the protesters. No government anywhere in the world would turn a blind eye to this unlawful behavior.

As far as this country’s Ministry of Justice is concerned, the case involving El-Zakzaky is no longer in its domain. The Federal Government no more has hands in the matter and to that extent, the government at the centre can be said to be clear of any alleged violations of court orders as being trumpeted everyday.

These rallies and street dances ostensibly to openly insult the President and other leaders, threatening bloodshed will lead nowhere because President Buhari will not ask the country’s judiciary to abandon due process and set a suspect free. At the same time, the administration is determined to enforce the decision of the court clearly issued. The Buhari administration has absolutely no hand in the on-going court case and the courts are free to determine the bail request and the final outcome.

The mentality that you are above the law and that your own rights are superior to other people's rights is unacceptable.

You can't be provoking other citizens by interfering with their own rights on public roads and disrupting their businesses and call it democratic freedom. In democratic traditions, their rights end where the rights of others begin.

Law abiding citizens must avoid deliberate lawlessness. It is not within the rights of any group to enter protected public institutions such as the National Assembly by force to attack police and destroy public and private property.

It is always advisable to embrace dialogue and eschew violence in all our actions so that we can continue to live together in peace.

We therefore appeal to the Shiite group to stop deliberate provocations that result in violence and fatalities and allow the trial of El-ZakZaky to take its course.

TDMK to develop $25 Million industrial park in Kaduna

The chairman Tamaidukka Group, TMDK, Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman Leda, has been granted over 100,000 Square Meters of land for the construction of $25m Dollars Agro Allied Industrial Park recently.

Alhaji Ahmed Suleiman Leda, said the processing plant upon completion, will have a daily processing capacity of 500 tonnes of both soya beans and cotton seeds while also producing 280 tonnes of animal feed.

TMDK with this move is expected to create up to 500 jobs directly and another five hundred indirectly, and will guarantee a reliable market to at least one hundred thousand farmers in the state and neighbouring states.

Alhaji Leda said the choice of Kaduna was informed by the ease of doing business regime created in the state by the governor Nasir El Rufai which he said has made the state an investor’s haven.

The Industrial park is to be located Sobawa layout Rigachikum, Igabi Local Government, Kaduna State is expected to fully commence operation by January 2019, the Kaduna State Government  through its Investment and Promotions Agency, KADIPA, the state’s Urban Planning Development Agency KASUPDA and Environmental Protection Agency (KEPA) have given all required approvals for the project.

Celabrating Lateef Jakande at 90

Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande is 90 years old, born 23 July 1929 in the Epetedo area of Lagos Island, Lagos State on 29 July 1929. His parents are from Omu-Aran, Kwara State. He studied at the Lagos public school at Enu-Owa, Lagos Island, then at Bunham Memorial Methodist School, Port Harcourt (1934–43). He studied briefly at King's College, Lagos in 1943, and then enrolled at Ilesha Grammar School in 1945, where he edited a literary paper called The Quarterly Mirror. A trained journalist and also a former governor of Lagos State from 1979 to 1983. He also served as a Minister of Works under the Sani Abacha military regime (1993–98).

Jakande began his journalism career in 1949 when started working with the Daily Service and then in 1953 joining the Nigerian Tribune. In 1956 he was appointed editor-in-chief of the Tribune by the owner Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His editorials were factual and forthright, and were treated by the colonial powers with respect. After leaving the Tribune in 1975, Jakande established John West Publications and began to publish The Lagos News. 

He served as the first President of the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN).

Encouraged by Awolowo, he ran for election as executive governor of Lagos State in 1979, on the Unity Party of Nigeria platform. He defeated his opponents, Adeniran Ogunsanya of NPP and Sultan Ladega Adeniji Adele of National Party of Nigeria and was subsequently sworn in as governor. His administration was effective and open and implemented the cardinal policies of his party. 

Jakande introduced housing and educational programs targeting the poor, building new neighborhood primary and secondary schools and providing free primary and secondary education. He established the Lagos State University. Jakande's government constructed over 30,000 housing units.

After the military take-over in 1983, Jakande was charged, prosecuted and convicted of treason, although later he was pardoned.

We salute this astute politician and journalist at 90.
